PROJECT VULCAN

A Studio Space Inclusive Arts Touring Production with Tasmanian actors who identify with a disability, finally took its final bow in March 2025 as participants of the second biggest fringe festival in the world- The Adelaide Fringe. At the Goodwood Institute Theatre in Adelaide, The Vulcanites performed their full length creation over three performances and garnered some rave reviews. Comedian WeeStu Campbell saw the show and said “I see a lot of shows every fringe, and yours is the first I’ve stood for.” he went on to say “I felt like the show had integrity in many layers. And the commitment from all the performers showed no half efforts. And the Improv through all the things that went wrong was CLASSIC!”. Simone Avramidis, the Artistic Director of the Goodwood said it was one of her favourtie shows of the festival and that we were welcome back anytime.

Huge congratulations to George, Nicole, Sarah and Julian and a huge thank you to their families for supporting them along this journey. Thanks to all the support staff that assisted our performers along the way especially Jack who watched the show evolve and witnessed countless runs.

Thank you to our friends at ABC Heywire Trailblazers and FRRR especially Taz and Em from Futres Isle for making our dream a reality, taking our crew to Canberra and helping us get to Geelong and eventually Adelaide. Thank you to Gina McKenzie and the late Terry Ryan for Costumes, Amanda Sutherland for tech support and Kevin Vong for artistic input. Thank you to our friends at Back to Back Theatre for the workshop space and feedback and for blazing a trail to what can be possible in inclusive arts.

Telling the story

The Story of Vulcan (Roman) or Hephaestus (Greek) is a tale of determination and redemption. After being cast out of the heavens by Hera for being born imperfect, Vulcan is raised on Earth to become a great artist and blacksmith whilst living with a physical disability. Our cast is made up of fine Tasmanian actors with intellectual and physical disabilities. They are portraying mythological characters with whom they share an infinity with their own lived experience.

Project Vulcan is an expression by artists with disability about their identity as Tasmanian Australians. As members of a young generation in need of a platform and a voice to be heard on issues such as bushfire prevention and conservation, global warming, disability rights in self-determination, and supporting future arts in a covid-19 world.
